Pediatric Ophthalmology Hinduja Childrens Eye Clinic
Children are not mini adults. Their health issues are highly specific and require specialized treatments from specialized experts. A Pediatric Ophthalmologist is an expert in evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of all eye problems in children. The process of assessing a child involves special charts and equipment apart from the knack making the child feel comfortable to go through an eye test. The visual system is immature until the age of 7 years and most of the modalities of treating vision threatening eye conditions are best done prior to this age. At every level, while treating the young ones, one needs to ensure that the due attention is paid not only to their current eye problem, but also that equal emphasis is placed on their rehabilitation and monitoring. This ensures optimum return of productivity during their adult years.
- Strabismus (Squint)
Squint treatment at the earliest is essential for an optimal visual outcome in children. Squint is common at birth or can also occur in early childhood. Treatment includes glasses, patching and suregry. Post surgical rehabilitation of vision and treatment of lazy eye is often ignored and is emphasized at our centre. Treatment of squint with latest techniques like small incision, botulinim toxin (Botox*) and adjustable squint surgery is also offered.
- Refractive Errors
Need for glasses is the commonest cause of reduced vision in children. Treatment mainly includes glasses or contact lenses. Prevention and treatment of lazy eye due to refractive errors is best done if detected early. Thus a routine eye test in all children is recommended at the age of 4 years to pick up undetected refractive errors.
- Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
Lazy eye occurs when there is lack of stimulation of one eye due to causes like refractive errors, squint or droopy eyelid. It is treated by patching or eye drops and is best done before the age of 7 years.
- Congenital Cataracts
Early surgery and visual rehabilitation with intraocular lenses, contact lenses or glasses is the optimum treatment. We have the state of the art evaluation and treatment techniques for cataracts in children. We specialize in aphakic contact lenses in newborn babies after cataract surgery to ensure good visual outcome.
- Glaucoma in children
- Retinopathy of Prematurity
- Tear duct obstructions
- Nystagmus (shaky eyes)
- Low vision aids (magnifying glasses and telescopes) to improve vision in children who have untreatable eye conditions.
- Eye check in neurologically challenged and dyslexic children
- Genetic eye condiitons
Strabismus Clinic (Squint clinic)
Strabismus (Cross-eyes) is a defect in which the eyes are not properly aligned and point in different directions. This prevents the eyes from working together in order to properly see an object.
Strabismus in children can have a profound effect on the development of vision in the early years of life. This is dealt with most effectively if the treatment is started as soon as possible. Lazy eye due to squint needs to be treated prior to 7 years of age, or else there is a risk of permanently reduced vision or lack of binocular vision.
While most adults who have strabismus have had it since childhood, strabismus can occur in adults that have had no childhood history of misalignment. Double vision is a hallmark of squint in adults. If there has been no prior history, a doctor may evaluate the patient for medical or neurological causes such as diabetes, thyroid disease, brain tumors, strokes, high blood pressure, head trauma or other neurological disorders.
Our strabismus patients, both children and adults, receive a comprehensive diagnosis and management of their ocular misalignment as well as double vision. We offer special eye measurement tests as well as treatment with glasses, prisms, muscle exercises and squint surgery as required. In addition to caring for all common forms of strabismus, our surgeon specializes in complex ocular motility disorders like eye muscle palsy and thyroid eye diseases. Specialized techniques such as adjustable squint surgery, botulinim toxin (Botox*) injections for squint and small incision squint surgery are offered at our centre.
