A forceful, innovative and renowned teacher and surgeon, Dr Udwadia was the first surgeon in India to start Laparoscopy in surgery in 1972, and the first to perform Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in the developing world in 1990.
He has had numerous awards, including the Padma Shree, bestowed on him for contributing to the development as also the growth of MAS in India and in the developing countries.
He has served on the editorial boards of several international journals, has been the Editor of Indian Journal of Surgery and is currently the Editor-in-chief of Journal of Minimal Access Surgery.
He has numerous publications to his credit and is the author of two landmark books on Laparoscopic surgery.
