Dr. Vinod Chandiramani is the third generation doctor from his family to be working for Hinduja Hospital

He literally grew up in the premises of Hinduja Hospital and is the third generation doctor from his family to have been working for the hospital. Dr. Vinod Chandiramani, the Head of Department of General Surgery has precisely seen the institution grow from two-storey building to a multi-tertiary healthcare hub, which now is a known establishment.

The story of the association of Chandiramani family with the Hinduja Hospital goes a long way back. It started with his grandfather, Dr. K. M. Chandiramani closely worked with the Hinduja family in their healthcare endeavor during his practicing years; followed by his father, Dr. A. K. Chandiramani who was associated with the hospital between the period 1959 and 1997. Considering the lineage, it wasn’t a difficult decision for Dr. Vinod Chandiramani to come back from England and join Hinduja Hospital. “The only difficult part was leaving a well paying job to come back to India,” he quips but quickly adds, “I always wanted to give back to society and from my father and grandfather I knew the work being done by Hinduja Hospital, so the decision wasn’t that tough.”

Dr. Chandiramani, after completing his post graduation in Surgery from Mumbai University, went to UK for higher surgical training. He completed a General Surgery rotation through various disciplines of surgery in UK over a period of 7 years. He returned to India in 1994 and since then has been working in the hospital. At no point did he think of switching? Pat comes the reply: “No, I had decided to carve a niche for myself in the healthcare sector and this institution has supported me in realizing that dream. For me it was important that the institution I join should follow ethical practices and have continuity of care and both objectives were met at this hospital.”

On Hinduja Hospital completing 60 years, he says, there is probably no hospital who can match the records that the hospital has achieved. “We have set a benchmark for other institutions. The hospital has been innovating itself and thus has always stood ahead of the race and yet we are affordable with the best doctors of India working round the clock. Where else will you find such a combination?”

“A big revolution has happened in the healthcare sector. New technologies, minimal invasive surgeries have taken the world by storm.” He says his generation of doctors has seen that transition and that when he discussed the same with grandfather, he was shocked. “The fact that Hinduja Hospital has been at the helm of getting these latest technology to India, makes me feel proud,” he adds.

For 11 years now, Dr. Chandiramani has been heading the Department of General Surgery and apart from his clinical responsibilities, he has also been appointed as the Medical Director of the new hospital from the Hinduja Group – Hinduja Healthcare Surgical at Khar. He practices a wide spectrum of surgery including gastro intestinal, minimal access, breast, thyroid operations etc.
