DR. F. D DASTUR
MRCP(Lon.), DCH, DTM&H, MPHIL

Dr. Dastur's years at “Hinduja” have been satisfying ones. The full time system for consultants has suited him and he feels it leads to better patient care. The excellent laboratories and radiology departments offer strong support to the clinicians; and to be able to discuss laboratory reports with colleagues directly after clinical rounds has been both educational and beneficial in the diagnosis of difficult patients.

He soon came to learn of the complexities of running a modern hospital, - more difficult than a five star hotel, as patients may move from OT to ICU to wards, and drugs and surgical items have to be costed continuously. He was entrusted with starting biweekly academic clinical meetings for consultants and a postgraduate teaching programme for junior doctors studying for post graduate degrees and diplomas. The importance of this was forced upon our consciousness as a damagingly high turnover of JMS was witnessed in several departments.

Their priority was their own future careers and not in working in modern hospitals with the latest equipment. We are presently recognised for the Diploma of the National Board (DNB) in 18 disciplines, which reflects a strong academic slant for a private hospital.

Personal Interests

His personal interest in the last few years has been in Hospital Infection Control and Infectious Diseases. The latter deserves to be a speciality in its own right not only because of the scourges of malaria, TB and HIV but also because of the complex infectious situations arising in today’s medicine from transplantation, oncology, intensive care medicine and noscomial infections. Dr Dastur feels that , if we can make a start in Mumbai in this direction and join with others in the country to get the discipline recognised for DNB, it would be a feather in the cap for Hinduja Hospital.
