Neurosurgery

Our neurosurgery section is a major referral centre in India for Cerebrovascular surgery, Skull base surgery, Acoustic neuroma surgery, Pituitary surgery, Minimal invasive surgery, Spinal surgery and Gamma knife Radio surgery.

The section has a state-of-the-art neurosurgery theatre that is fully equipped with the viewing wand, MRT/CT compatible Leksell Stereotactic system, accessories for minimally invasive neurosurgery, Zeiss multivision neuro microscope, Ultrasonic surgical aspirator, Laser and Midas Rex high-speed drill system. In addition, the neuro imaging consisting of the CT scan, MRI and DSA - useful tools in diagnosing neurological problems.

The neurosurgery department offers a fellowship training program for young neurosurgeons, recognized by the World Federation of Neurological Societies (WFNS) and is the only centre in India and one of the 20 in the world to offer this course. The department is recognized by WFNS as an Education Centre for Skull based surgery.

  • Trauma to the brain and spine
  • Aneurysms
  • Blocked arteries
  • Chronic low-back pain, birth defects
  • Tumors in the brain and spinal cord
  • Peripheral nerve issues like carpal tunnel syndrome, brachial plexus injury, peripheral nerve tumors, injuries etc
  • Tuberculoma
  • Brain Abscesses
  • Hydrocephalus

Gamma Knife Surgery - The Neurosurgery department is the first in India to have acquired the Gamma Knife, which is the "Gold standard in Stereotactic surgery" for treatment of brain tumors and arterio venous malformations (AVMs), functional neurological disorders like Trigeminal Neuralgia, Parkinsons disease etc. The department is also the first in the country to have the Viewing Wand, which is a wonder tool to assist.

Acoustic neuroma surgery – This surgery is performed in collaboration with neurosurgeons and neurologists who specialize in the inner ear or bones. The surgery involves removing tumour through inner ear or through a window in skull.

Skull base surgery – This is a specialized type of surgery performed by neuro surgeons that focuses on treating conditions at the base of the skull. It is a highly specialized, minimally invasive surgical technique.

Cerebrovascular surgery – This form of surgery deals with repairing of the blood vessels that supply oxygen to the brain. These may include microsurgery, endovascular surgery, or radiosurgery.

Neuro-oncology – The branch of neuro oncology is the study of brain and spinal cord neoplasms. A team of high skilled professionals at the hospital approach each patient with empathy and care in recognition of the particular needs.

Pituitary surgery – This form of surgery is the most common technique used to remove pituitary tumours which is located at the bottom of the brain and above the inside of nose.

Neuro-endoscopy – This is a minimal invasive surgery in which a surgeon removes the tumour through small incisions in the skull. Neuro-endoscopy gives access to surgeons to those parts of the brain that cannot be reached via the traditional forms of surgery.

Minimally invasive neurosurgery – It refers to any form of surgery that is less invasive that a normal surgery. The minimally invasive neurosurgery uses small flexible lighted tubes to visualize various parts of the brain.

Peripheral nerve surgery – It involves cutting-edge surgical treatment for pain caused by injury or compression of brain.

The most advanced technology in gamma knife surgery, the Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion brought in by the hospital is the first of its kind in western India. It represents the future of sterotactic radiosurgery, as it radically broadens both the techniques and the scope of treatment by offering faster, more flexible surgical procedures, thereby enabling substantially more patients to be treated with less effort.

The Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion has many advantages over others, namely:

  • Fully integrated automated system: the radiation beams are shaped exactly around the patients tumor helping to treat several tumors in one session.
  • Automated patient positioning system: Simplified treatment procedure with reduced time.
  • Patient communication: The patient can communicate via video camera and an intercom at all times.
  • Patient safety: The new technology considerably reduces the radiation levels in the room thus ensuring patient safety.
  • Better treatment planning: unlimited dose sculpting using composite shots and dynamic shaping helps in improved treatment planning for the medical professional.
