Dr Vasant Mundra has largely been associated with general hospital psychiatry and has spent considerable time treating patients who come for physical complaints to various departments. For example a patient suffering from chest pain, breathlessness, and palpitations after investigations and a consultation in cardiology showing no cardiac illness would be referred. Also a patient with headache, pain in the neck, backache with no neurological abnormality would be referred. A large number of patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, such as abdominal pain, gas, irregular bowels, appetite problems, etc are referred by consultants after investigations. Patients with major medical and surgical problems such as malignancy, amputations, dementia, disabling chronic illnesses would be referred for help in achieving a better quality of life.
He has special interest in treating people suffering from 'stress'. He looks at brain as a tissue, whose main function is to help the organism adapt to its circumstances. Illnesses such as depression disable this function, and people perceive stress. He assists in bring the brain back to its efficient functioning, with medication and counseling which does not include advise like 'change the job', 'change family’, etc. but by empowering the person in handling his job, or family.
Marital issues, children with academic and behavior problems, sexual problems, even major psychiatric illnesses such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Alcohol and Substance abuse, are also seen by him in his clinic.
