Transvaginal oocyte / Egg retrieval (TVOR), also referred to as egg collection, is a technique used in in vitro fertilization (IVF) in order to remove oocytes from the ovary of the female, enabling fertilization outside the body. Transvaginal oocyte retrieval is more properly referred to as transvaginal ovum retrieval when the oocytes have matured into ova, as is normally the case in IVF .
When the follicles are mature (determined by ultrasound measurements of follicle size and hormone measurements), the egg aspiration procedure is done to take the eggs out.
We use short general anesthesia for the ovum pick up, making it a painless procedure for the patient.
For conducting egg retrieval, (Fig-6) a needle is passed through the top of the vagina under ultrasound guidance to get to the ovary and follicles. The fluid in the follicles is aspirated through the needle and the eggs detach from the follicle wall and are aspirated out of the ovary. The oocyte-cumulus complex is pulled from the follicle wall when fluid is aspirated through the needle.
Complete procedure may take around 30-45min depending on the number of eggs retrieved
The fluid with the eggs is passed to the IVF lab where the eggs are identified, rinsed in culture media, and placed in small drops in plastic culture dishes. The dishes with the eggs are then kept in specialized IVF incubators under carefully controlled environmental conditions.
