P. D. Hinduja Hospital & MRC successfully steps into the second year of the Type 1 Diabetes Initiative clinic
Mumbai, November 2020: P. D. Hinduja Hospital & MRC in partnership with Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), Chennai, and KEM Hospital, Pune announces its second successful year of the Type 1 Diabetes Initiative Clinic. This initiative was introduced in 2019 as a multi-centric registry for treatment, awareness, and research on Type 1 Diabetes from an Indian perspective.
This 5 year patient-centered project focuses to enroll and support 300 patients living with Type 1 diabetes under 18 years of age from financially weaker sections. During this period, the patients will be provided with free treatment which also includes regular consultation by endocrinologists, ophthalmologists, and diabetes foot specialists followed by free lab tests, insulin, and glucometers. By the end of the 5-year tenure, clinical research would be conducted on managing Type1 diabetes. India being the diabetes capital with the 2nd highest diabetes burden, there is no Indian research material available on it, thereby this initiative will help contribute towards building an Indian clinical research. The insights gathered will further help to curate more effective low-cost treatment therapies from an Indian perspective.
Dr. Phulrenu Chauhan, Section Coordinator of the Endocrinology Department who also heads the project at P. D. Hinduja Hospital & MRC expresses, “Management of diabetes is an expensive affair. Due to financial problems, many poor patients drop out of the care regimen as T1D1 needs continuous treatment. Different factors can contribute to type 1 diabetes, including genetics and some viruses. It can occur in adults, while type 1 diabetes typically occurs during childhood or adolescence. If not provided with treatment at an early stage it can cost an individual’s life. Through this program, we aim to provide uninterrupted care to patients to safeguard their quality of life and curb the challenges posed by the disease.”
A MoU was signed with Hinduja Foundation by P. D. Hinduja Hospital & MRC, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), Chennai, and KEM Hospital, Pune in Oct’19. During the first year of patient recruitment in November 2019, the program enrolled 110 patients. P. D. Hinduja Hospital is still looking forward to enrolling more patients who have been deprived of seeking treatment facilities due to weaker financial capabilities and help them lead a regular lifestyle with T1D.
